Double Giveaway and Less than One Month to Go!

I can’t wait to get started on this week’s giveawaybut before that, I’d like to answer a question I’ve been getting lately: Why should I pre-order a book? Here are three good reasons:

  1. Rankings. A great first day of sales can pop a book up in the rankings of the major sellers–places like Amazon and Barnes & Noble–and that can get a new release tons of free advertising exposure on best-seller lists, promotions, and re-orders on retail sites and in brick-and-morter stores. High rankings on release day can make a book a success!
  2. Rankings (see above)
  3. Rankings (see above)

In other words . . . preorders are great for authors! If you are planning on reading In A Far-Off Land or giving it as a gift, consider pre-ordering from an online retailer or from your favorite bookstore. I would appreciate it!

Now, on to the giveaway. Kate Breslin lives in the rainy part of Washington not far from where I grew up and often return to visit my mom and sisters. (in fact, I’m going there this weekend so watch my social media for tulip pictures!) I was lucky enough to meet Kate when I did a book signing many years ago at a Seattle bookstore. I was thrilled when she agreed to read an early copy of In A Far-Off Land and even MORE thrilled that her review was chosen for the back cover copy! Thank you, Kate! Here’s what she had to say:

“From the first page, this remarkable story set in glittering Hollywood during the Great Depression captured my imagination. Dropped into a cast of kindred spirits; humankind in all its flawed state, with scandal and secrets and the deep wounds we’ve all carried, never healing if not for the power of God’s mercy and forgiveness. Aspiring actress Mina Sinclaire’s amazing pilgrimage from the dark hollows of her despair into the light of unconditional Love will offer hope to anyone who has ever believed themselves beyond redemption. Bravo!” — Kate Breslin, Far Side of the Sea

If you love historical fiction about WWI, you’re going to love Kate Breslin’s novels. Check them out here on her website and order them from Ballast Book Co in Bremerton, WA or from your favorite book retailer. I’d also encourage you to sign up for Kate’s newsletter HERE to get all her fun updates and book news.

The second book giveaway is an amazing novel about a group of young adults in Germany who risked their lives to oppose Hitler’s Nazi regime. It is a fascinating look at WW2 from a perspective we rarely see–that of the German youth who opposed their own government. Amanda Barratt was kind enough to read In A Far-Off Land and so encouraging in her endorsement:

With her signature blend of luminous prose and immersive historical detail, Stephanie Landsem draws readers into the dazzle and darkness of 1930s Hollywood. From beginning to end, I was riveted by this masterful retelling of the parable of the Prodigal Son and moved by the poignant exploration of the power of grace in the midst of shame. Superbly written and absolutely stunning! –Amanda Barratt, author of The White Rose Resists: A Novel of the German Students Who Defied Hitler

You can find out more about Amanda and her novels HERE on her website, and see what I wrote about The White Rose Resists in a recent blog post. Order her books from her favorite indie bookseller, Baker Book House, HERE and consider signing up for her newsletter HERE.

In A Far-Off Land

  1. My favorite play to browse for books is The Book Loft in German Village. A huge bookshop in Columbus , Ohio. It’s in the German section of Columbus in the downtown. Very old section. It’s in an old building. Many rooms of books to browse through. They sell other stuff too. Puzzles, posters, comic books. But the best part are the thousands of books inside. Old and new.

  2. I usually visit the library every 2 weeks. Our library in Alvin, Tx is great. The librarians are so helpful and will go out of their way to locate the books you request. Thank you

  3. My favorite place to browse for books is Amazon. I always get them through them. Although I have ordered from Christian books.com. I used to get all my books and ordered them through our small town Bible Bookstore but after selling the previous place is my to go place.

    1. You can’t beat Amazon’s prices of their selection. They have everything and I really do like it that they can predict what books I’d like based on previous purchases. There’s a reason they are so popular!

  4. […] Number one. Books are in early! With the mail what it is, and everybody running behind on everything, I had a recurring nightmare that copies of In A Far-Off Land would be late in arriving at stores. Surprise — they’re early! Both Valley Bookseller in Stillwater and Baker Book House have their stock on hand. Those of you who ordered from Amazon need to start checking your mailboxes. For everyone else, it’s not to late to pre-order. (Not to sound like a broken record, but pre-orders are VERY IMPORTANT to authors, and you can find out why RIGHT HERE.) […]
