Gaze Upon Jesus: Meet Mary, the Mother of the God

I must admit, the thought of writing a story from the perspective of Mary filled me with fear. The mother of the God, the most important woman in human history — and I had to capture her in 2,000 words or less? A daunting task, and one that I wasn’t sure I could do.

Many Christians, especially women, have a great devotion to the Holy Mother and because of that, have their own ideas about how she may have looked, what she felt, and what she might have been thinking as she bore and raised her son, Jesus. I didn’t want to alter or dispute the ideas anyone might already have about Mary.

But as with all things, prayer calmed my fear and led me to inspiration. I decided to write Mary as both the historical young woman of two thousand years ago and the mother of God that I had come to know in my own life. I hope this Mary is one that you, too, can identify with and love. Most of all, I hope that you can step into the scene and perhaps glimpse what this young, holy woman may have felt as she was visited by an angel of God and told of the amazing plan that God had for her and for the salvation of the world through the birth of his son, Jesus.

As the angel Gabriel said to Mary, “Do not be afraid!” Let us remember that the Lord has a plan for each one of us and it is more wonderful than we can ever imagine.
